I want to share the story of what went into preparing this meeting space – not just the technical steps, but the spiritual architecture behind it.
WHY THIS MEETING IS DIFFERENT
Most online platforms treat Black body cultural/thought capital not as divine expression but as data to be extracted and content to be harvested.
Zoom is owned by BlackRock/Vanguard.
Whova is under the financial and political jurisdiction of the Chinese state.
Both profit from Black digital presence without accountability, reciprocity, or care.
How do we earnestly enter a conversation about Black digital futures while sitting inside infrastructures, under surveillance, that undermine the very sovereignty we seek to build.
That contradiction is the very dynamic I identify as Digital Blackface – the migration of Black cultural labor, thought, expression, and genius into spaces that profit from our presence; from the stage to the screen, now to the code.
This gathering is a S.T.E.M. altar:
- Space – A private Jitsi server, sovereign and enclosed.
- Time – Hours of installation, configuration, and refinement.
- Energy – Tuning each component so nothing harms or extracts from our earth community.
- Money & Movement – Hosting this meeting on an ethical, hydro-powered San Francisco data center that refuses fossil fuels and reduces extraction from the Global South. At a cost of $40 per month, with no ROI, because I choose to align my provision with purpose; and Freedom is never free.
